Thanks for the kudos, BestBusiness Card.net ! They chose only seventeen business cards for interior designers out of the vast selection all over the internet, and one of those was my design for Louisiana designer Stacy Naquin’s black and silver foil ones. Printed at Studio Z several years ago on Cranes 600 gsm Lettra by Rhea Rynearson, they are an unusual example of letterpress printing. Stacy just landed a national TV show and we have a new design coming along soon… Meanwhile, these are still turning heads.

REM January 2014 CoverWith interviews covering five interesting (well, who’s not around here?) local business owners AND a great piece on “Propreneurs” by Cynthia Wall, this month’s Real Estate Magazine is crammed with ideas and inspirations to kick off our new business year. For instance, I love what Tracey Coddington had to say about selling real estate: “Real estate is about as dynamic as life can be. In the real estate field. one is supporting people in some of the largest decisions they will make in their lives — it involves all of the pieces of their life: family, home, work and finances, hopes and dreams.” The way we frame our businesses and their goals and intentions actually makes our work deeper, richer, and more meaningful.

I had a coach once (Bill Rodgers) who told me my design work and printing and my card line “supported people from cradle to grave” …He meant that from birth announcements, to business cards, wedding invitations, to memorial cards, and everything in between, people need and use my various services for the celebrations in their lives, for connection and communication in their lives. That simple assessment really changed the way I held my work. It’s all true.

I have emails from people who actually got married because of one of my Ladies Who Lunch cards (not too many more of those left but I have sold probably close to a half a million of them!) One couple nicknamed their baby Pinkie Lou after one of my cards…you never can tell when you are going to make a difference in someone’s life through your particular “genius,” which is what this month’s REM is all about. Last month’s issue, “Community Can-Do” — about local charities, was a huge success. We couldn’t keep our boxes full! This community is just so full of caring, dedicated, beautiful, and effective people that it’s kind of mind boggling. Thank YOU for making Real Estate Magazine a part of your life too, and for telling your friends that the name of the magazine doesn’t exactly tell the whole story of what the magazine represents in our community. Every reader makes a difference, and we so appreciate hearing that you enjoy the magazine and read it all the time (and we hear this a lot!). Every time you buy something from one of our advertisers, you are helping all of us make a difference, too. Every time you take out an ad, it’s not just an ad for your business, but a support for what REM is able to do in keeping our whole area aware of what fabulosity we get to live inside here on the coast. It’s a big, huge win-win situation, and thank you.

Alkemi Business Card front

Chef Lisa Bower has been busy creating the most spectacular flavored Kombucha recipes ever, which will be available to the public soon. (Lucky me — she let me have some raspberry from a recent batch, and it was so delicious, I must have more, asap!) Her meticulous branding strategy included business cards that made people’s mouths water as much as the Kombucha does, and we just delivered these.

We are in love with these black, two-ply (very thick) cards that bear the logo (a foxy fox or her Shiba Inu foxy dog?), stamped in black gloss foil, and whose tail encircles the alchemical symbol for gold, in gold foil (of course), along with the business name, also in gold foil. These visual puns show up in many places in her concept, and all add up to rich, rich, rich beauty, and something magical too.

The backs have all her contact information in gold foil, but in the subtle black gloss foil, black-on-black, the slogan, “Time reveals truth,” leaves another mystery to ponder. Or at least drops a little tidbit of wisdom as the final fillip. With alchemy, there’s no end to the surprises.

We are eager to find Lisa’s amazing product on the shelves of local bars and restaurants, aren’t you? And we are proud that she chose Studio Z Mendocino to complete the business cards of her dreams. Here’s what she wrote me after receiving the prototypes: “THANK YOU  THANK YOU  THANK YOU!!!!  You rocked my world with the cards today…they are exactly how I envisioned the graphic representation of my product and the energy I wish to convey with my business concept…  Happy smiles!”

Oh, did I mention that Lisa and I “got each other” the minute we met? Yes, it was a great pleasure to work with such a creative and positive client. One of the great perks of my work! That seems magical, too.

Danish photographer Carsten Mol found Studio Z Mendocino online and contacted me about a year ago. He wanted to have some really special business cards, and, of course, that is what we do here. We instantly felt a rapport, even though separated by many miles and much water and emailed enthusiastically about what he had in mind, ideas I had for the design and materials, colors, possibilities and his dreams. It was sort of like meeting an old friend I didn’t know yet. Carsten was rebranding and got back to me after several months when his website was completed, as he promised he would.

When the cards arrived to Denmark, this is how Carsten started his blog post about them: “Today I got my brand new Business card! And what can I say more than, I just love them!!!! They are small pieces of art.” The nice things he said about working with me almost made me cry! He immediately sent me these wonderful shots he took of them and I feel proud to post them here today.

I often say, “I love the modern world!” and, really, I mean it. Never before have we been able to do business in this way, to connect with like-minded people in any corner of the world and relate to each other, feel into others’ lives in this marvelous way, affect each other and even affect each others’ friends and colleagues and, of course, clients, most importantly. It really seems like some sort of miracle, a miracle we take for granted every day, that allows unprecedented communication and relationship to occur regardless of geographical location.

Thank you, Carsten, for reaching across the ocean from Scandinavia to the USA, to California, to Mendocino County, to my little office at Studio Z Mendocino, and to my heart. It’s a beautiful miracle to know you.

Dallas style vixen, Ana Pettus is launching her new line of perfumes, candles, bags and other chic pleasures very soon. To hit the ground running (in her Rodarte stilettos), Ana chose Studio Z Mendocino to design and letterpress print her intensely fabulous business cards and stationery. 
Because Ana’s colors are BLACK and WHITE, we wanted to use a dense, super-dark black paper, but it was not thick enough to suit our taste. We often use black Museum Mount for our two-sided business cards, but it has a slight charcoal cast to it and won’t take white foil to save our souls. In order to get all the elements Ana wanted, we ended up laminating two pieces of our intense-black-but-not-so-thick paper, with a piece of chipboard between them. This created a very thick and luxurious card but with a bit of brown chipboard showing along the sandwiched edge. To remedy this we edge painted the 2.5″ square cards in matte black. The snake-y AP logo, which Ana brought to us already done, was foiled in glossy black, and her name, all in lower case, super bold letters, was put on in opaque white foil. The backs feature a block of white typography.


The extraordinary results are causing a stir wherever the peripatetic Ana finds herself handing them out: Dallas, Paris, New York, Rio, or some island you never heard of. Turning heads is something the irrepressible Brazilian is quite used to.
