Pocket Folder with Tropical Band

Pocket Folder with Tropical Band

Several months ago, Jeanne Aboud contacted me by email in a sort of miraculous turn of the Universe. She wondered if we would do printing for international clients, as she was from the Caribbean. I wrote back immediately, very curious, to say, “Where in the Caribbean? My Mom was from Trinidad.” Well, how amazing to find that Jeanne, too, is from Trinidad Tobago. But more astounding yet, she told me she had read an article about my shop in Departures Magazine over ten years ago and saved it all this time. The fact that she could lay her hands on it, now that her daughter was about to be engaged, to one like me who is “organizationally challenged,” seemed nothing short of a deity-like feat. These coincidences and miraculous talents sent us off together on a wonderful adventure in quantum physics and design assisted by inspiration from my DNA…or something! I can’t explain it better than the following note from Jeanne does:

“Your invitations were spectacular and made a very big hit. Guests called when they were received just to say how beautiful they were. Thank you, thank you again for what you put into making them. I knew from the begining when we spoke and you said your mother was from Trinidad that they were going to be very special not only to me but to you.

The evening of the party my very tropical garden looked out of this world with fresh red poinsettias and candles, candles everywhere and our guests arrived in the rain, Yes, Zida, the rain. God decided that evening he was going to tease us so it drizzled and stopped and drizzled and stopped for the evening. Our family and friends had a ball, nothing stopped the celebration and people danced under umbrellas or in the rain. Thanks to the champagne.”

When Alice Park, wonderful children’s and babies’ photographer, came to me for new business cards, she expected us to print her already-designed logo onto nice paper and call it a day. The only design work I needed to add was the typography on the backs of her cards, the ostensible reason we carry business cards at all: how to contact us: URL, phone and so on. Very often, in this shop at least, the unexpected leaps up and seizes control of everything and we go galloping off in some completely new direction before we know what hit us. I think it’s an indication of Alice’s perfected talent at capturing that split second when a photo is exactly right that she was able to step back and say, “Wait a minute. I LOVE THE BACK OF THESE BUSINESS CARDS. It says US perfectly and I want to change the order right now.” I was so amazed (and flattered, too, I’ll admit). Often people come to us looking for letterpress printing, not knowing that we are also designers of logos and typographers of some merit. It is always exciting to have a client who totally “gets it” right in the middle of a job. Everyone is so pleased with the resulting cards.

We printed them in black ink, but a light black to keep the integrity of the type, on Cranes 600 gsm Lettra paper. Very understated, with a touch of whimsy to reflect the nature of her beautiful work. Here is what she said:

“I received a package this afternoon that I’m SO overjoyed about! I have been working with the fabulous Zida Borcich of Studio Z in what I thought would be a simple and lovely new business card. What I received was SO much more….

Zida patiently held my hand through this entire process. I knew Alice Park Photography had changed over the last year.
Zida recognized this and quickly designed a card that was more Alice Park Photography than I could ever describe.

I’m still wowed by the quality of these beautiful letterpressed cards. 600 gsm of the richest, purest card stock available.

The entire design is clean, elegant, and so very us. I love, love, love it.

I can not say enough about how much I’ve enjoyed working with Zida and her wonderful team. My sincerest apology to all those in the future who receive one of these beautiful cards from me. I will probably talk your ear off about Zida :)”

We love you, too Alice. Thank you so much. Z

Taken from the blog of Robert Her, www.nLightenImages.com: “A while back I remember coming across Ben Chrisman’s blog and seeing his awesome letterpress business cards. I remember how classy they looked and how it really portrayed Ben’s contemporary, yet classic, style of documenting weddings. It really left an impression on me in terms of how I want to brand my business and myself to potential clients. Well, during the holidays, I gave myself a gift (which I rarely do I swear) and ordered some AWESOME letterpress business cards from Zida and Studio Z. Holy smokes these cards are sweet! These photos can’t really do them justice as the craftsmanship and quality is something you must feel and see in person to believe. So for all you brides out there, if you’re going for elegance, grace, classic, modern for your invitations, go letterpress w/ Studio Z. Zida is pure joy to work with.”

Robert was very great to work with. He made me feel so appreciated throughout the whole process of getting his cards to the press. And then, when they arrived at his mailbox, WOW! This guy really knows how to make a printer feel good. Thank you so much Robert. What a fun project and what a beautiful result. Z
